About Us
The Pre-SOMA, Student Osteopathic Medical Association, chapter at the University of California, Riverside strives to educate prospective medical school applicants about osteopathic medicine, as well as discredit and educate about the myths between allopathic and osteopathic medicine. Through various events - many of which include guest speakers from various schools, mentors, leadership, and community service opportunities - Pre-SOMA at UCR helps students interested in the medical field to become competitive applicants in preparation for their entrances to colleges of osteopathic medicine.
What We Do:
Guest Speakers: Every Quarter we invite the Dean of Admissions from various Medical Schools as well as current Medical Students to give informational panels or speeches and to answer any questions you as members might have.
Leadership: Starting Winter quarter we open up applications for Fresh Representative. This position is intended to give future board members a chance to learn about what each team member does and what duties it entails. It is a great growing opportunity help prepare yourself as a future board member.
Research: Healing others is made possible through knowledge, so naturally research is a fundamental part of the health professions. Many medical schools offer dual M.D./PhD degrees as well, so we provide opportunities for members to join research labs and fuel their desire in learning.
Community Service: We host and give information about events and programs that can be used towards acquiring service hours such as with our mentorship program.
Clinics: It is imperative that our members get hands on experience relating to health careers so we will be hosting Ultrasound, CPR, and many more clinics throughout the year to provide this practical understanding.
Princeton Review: This year we are continuing our partnership with the Princeton Review Board. We will have speakers come and talk about the MCAT and provide information regarding the Medical School Application Process. In the past some events including raffling of MCAT books, a live Q&A quiz session, and hosting a full mock MCAT for members.
Mentors: We are please to announce the implementation of our Big/Little Mentorship program. This program pairs a group of younger classmen with an upper classmen who will mentor them through the pre-med path. This also provide a community of peers with similar interests and hopefully helps build relationships that last throughout their undergraduate years. Networking is another aspect we stress as it is your relationships with other health professionals and patients that will aid your development as a future physician.
Socials: Medicine incorporates a lot of hard work and studying, but it is important to remember Doctors are only human. We like to host at least one event per quarter where members can come relax and play games while meeting other future physicians.
Pre-Soma loves to see it's members interested and flourish throughout their years. The programs we offer are simply a few things we do and change every year. We offer flexibility in our opportunities and can always incorporate any suggestions you as members may want to see incorporated in the future.
